Trulussó Tequila Review: A pricey and beautifully packaged tequila worth the pour?
While all three are solid tequilas, the price-to-value equation doesn't work out compared to so many other excellent bottles available for much less. The gorgeous packaging and the premium, celebrity-backed market positioning surely pushes prices northward.

STEVE'S NOTES
SHARE WITH: Tequila fans in general. It's good stuff.
WORTH THE PRICE: No. While all three are solid tequilas, the price-to-value equation doesn't work out compared to so many other excellent bottles available for much less. The gorgeous packaging and the premium market positioning surely combine to push these prices northward.
BOTTLE, BAR OR BUST: Bar. It's worth a try if you find Trulussó surrounded by a bunch of additive-laden competitors. If you like it well enough to commit to full bottles, it's your cash and your choice. As I mentioned, at least it's good liquid.
OVERALL: I really enjoy when tequila makers send all three of their traditional expressions–blanco, reposado and añejo–together so I can see how the same spirit ages over many months. This trio exemplifies distiller Sergio Cruz's success in ensuring this spirit's base flavors are discernible throughout the two aged expressions. I don't know how difficult that is to achieve, but as a consumer, I know how puzzling it can be when I taste a blanco and then its aged siblings, and wonder how they're so different. Clearly, Cruz appreciates creating a "house style" so easily found in this line. I do, too.
Blanco: Though soft, the nose is pleasant with tropical flowers, lightly roasted agave, pastry cream, lemon peel and confectioner's sugar. After leaving this bottle alone for two weeks, the nose got even richer and enticing with cooked agave notes.
It's not quite as dynamic on the palate: It leads with a little white pepper, light minerality, honey and cooked agave notes. Two weeks before, there wasn't a lot going on overall, but the 14-day rest, plus the headspace created by using it in some Tommy's margaritas (they turned out terrific!) definitely opened up its fruit character.
Reposado: The nose is super subtle: a little cooked agave and agave nectar, some petrichor and some wildflowers. A little fresh pineapple comes after some rest, but not a lot.
The palate is a much different story. Cooked agave flavors are abundant here–dark honey, roasted pineapple and a little butterscotch–backed up by black pepper, some fresh papaya, toasted oak, lemon peel, hibiscus tea and a little bubble gum. Mouthfeel is nice, rich and spicy, and the finish is surprisingly and pleasantly drying. This is a mannerly reposado that threatens to become sophisticated as headspace develops in the bottle.
Añejo: On the nose, vinazes (the sour and musty byproduct of tequila making) leads but intrigues rather than offending. The petrichor and cooked agave present on the reposado are there, but a little muted. A little golden raisin and buttery pastry dough arrive with more minerality and some cotton candy commingling.
The palate is honeyed and rich, backed by cooked agave, agave nectar, lemon, black pepper and toasted oak. The mouthfeel attests to its 18-month rest in French oak: soft but rich and weighty and without being overly woody. It's also worthy to note the liquid's pale straw color, a sign of well- and oft-used barrels. Some distillers want barrels solely for oxygenation, and if that's what distiller Sergio Cruz wanted, he got it in spades.
